When my daughter joined the tennis team in her school her trainer asked her about her name.
- “Aitene.” My daughter answered.
The trainer opened her mouth and eyes widely, and yelled:
- “ISIS?!!!”
That was in front the whole team. Of course, all of them fell in continuous laugh. My daughter smiled and said:
- “No. Aitene. (Ai) like the letter I, and (tene) like number ten”
I am sure the trainer heard the name wrong, but why? Of course, it is not because my daughter could not pronounce her name. It might be because the trainer did not hear this name before. But why ISIS? I believe that what was in her mind when she saw my daughter in her hijab. Also, she might not have a Muslim girl in her team before, or it might be a first time for her to meet a Muslim while she knows s/he is a Muslim. Beside she might wonder: “How will this girl wear the tennis uniform?”
